A municipal solid waste treatment base in Helsinki, Finland, completed upgrading for construction waste crushing and sorting lines in June. Construction muck, abandoned doors and windows are mixed with steel bars, nails, aluminum and copper pipelines. Single-stage traditional magnetic separation can only separate ferrous metals, while a large amount of non-ferrous metals are landfilled with tailings, resulting in severe resource waste and failure to meet EU circular economy recovery targets.
The complete sorting system adopts two-stage configuration. A heavy-duty permanent magnetic drum separator at the first stage rapidly captures all steel bars, screws and other ferromagnetic materials. A mobile high-frequency eddy current separator at the second stage accurately sorts non-ferrous metals including aluminum, copper and brass with particle size above 0.3mm. The modular design allows quick disassembly and transfer to multiple sorting stations.
After renovation, the recovery rate of ferrous metals from construction waste reaches 99.9%, and the recovery rate of aluminum, copper and other non-ferrous metals hits 99.6%. An extra 120 tons of valuable metals can be recycled monthly, generating over 280,000 Euros of additional annual revenue from metal sales. The project successfully passed EU solid waste recycling subsidy audit and became a benchmark for construction waste resource recovery in Northern Europe.
