A lithium battery recycling enterprise in Ontario, Canada, completed a pilot project for sorting crushed black mass of waste power batteries in June. Single traditional eddy current separation cannot separate mixed magnetic iron and nickel impurities in black mass, leading to high purification costs of nickel, cobalt and lithium and a metal recovery rate lower than 82%.
The project adopts an integrated composite solution of dry powder electromagnetic separator and eddy current separator. The dry powder electromagnetic separator removes ferrous magnetic impurities first, then the high-frequency eddy current separator separates conductive metals such as copper and aluminum. The integrated magnetic-electric double screening system purifies battery black mass, equipped with an intelligent automatic magnetic field adjustment module to adapt to crushed materials from different batches of waste batteries.
Pilot test data shows that the comprehensive recovery rate of nickel, cobalt and lithium rises to 91.2%, the consumption of purification chemicals is cut by 36%, and the discharge of wastewater and solid waste is reduced simultaneously. The Canadian local environmental authority listed this magnetic-electric combined separation scheme as a recommended process for the battery recycling industry. Multiple North American recycling enterprises visited the site to negotiate bulk procurement.
